Nancy H. Barkemeyer, Principal

West Rowan Middle School has quite a unique history. This school started in 1880 as a one-room day school called Cleveland Colored School. In 1943 it was renamed R.A. Clement School after Mr. Rufus A. Clement who so kindly provided the land, financial aid, moral support, encouragement, and physical labor to make the school a reality. In 1968, fourteen years after the famous Brown vs. Board of Education court decision, R.A. Clement School was desegregated. West Rowan Junior High School became the new name for this next step in our history and was structured for 7th and 8th grade students from the western part of Rowan County. In 1989 the concept of interdisciplinary teaming was implemented and the school became West Rowan Middle School. The fall of 1992 brought about another change. West Rowan Middle School closed the doors on the present campus and relocated to a new, larger campus completing the transition to a true middle school organizational structure.

At this present time Mrs. Nancy H. Barkemeyer is principal at West Rowan Middle School. The student population is somewhat diverse, representing a cross section of the (Salisbury) city and (Rowan) county population. Currently West Rowan Middle School serves 746 students in grades 6-8 and has over 52 highly qualified staff members. This staff is working diligently to prepare our students for the 21st century.
