Elizabeth Hanford Dole Elementary School opened in August, 1999 with just over 500 students.  Situated in a rural area near East Spencer, Hanford Dole combined the attendance area of John S. Henderson Elementary school and part of the North Rowan Elementary School attendance area.   The staff of Henderson worked closely with architect Bill Burgin of  Ramsay, Burgin, Smith Architects to design the school.  The school was named for United States Senator Elizabeth Hanford Dole of Salisbury.
