I am thrilled to be teaching 5th grade again at Shive Elementary and I am especially excited to meet each of you! You are at last, "the BIG kids" at school. Reading:
We are so excited about the Common Core because it encourages us to integrate all content areas into the "reading" part of the day. Know that your child will read a variety of texts, including narrative and expository, as he/she works toward applying various reading skills learned during class. In writing, we are working on writing narratives as well as other integrated writing assignments within other subject areas. I am also excited to be doing CAFE in our classroom this year. This is an individualized approach to reading which targets that areas of comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary. Please ask your child what he/she is working on and practice their strategy with them at home. Please understand that I meet with your child individually and on a regular basis to look for evidence of improvement in the the area of reading.
