Knollwood Elementary School was established in April 1976 with the closing of two elementary schools, R. G. Kizer Elementary located in the Rowan Mills area and Patterson Elementary located in the Patterson Community of southern Rowan county. The late Mr. C.L. Barnhardt, Assistant Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, had the idea of naming the school Knollwood because it sits on a knoll surrounded by trees. Mr. Bill T. Shive was the first principal and remained at Knollwood until his retirement in 1993. Knollwood opened its doors to approximately 440 students in grades K-6. Currently Knollwood has an enrollment of 630 students in grades K-5.
