Rowan-Salisbury School System Student Transfer Information

School Choice decisions should be made during the spring transfer window (March 1st – April 30th), but in no event later than July 1st. An exception to this July 1st deadline may be made for students who move into the choice zone areas after July 1st and prior to the start of school. Transfers into specified schools via school choice provisions will not be allowed during the school year.

Notification letters of assignment for 2013/2014 will be mailed no later than June 14th.
The following schools are open to School Choice under specific guidelines:
• North Rowan High School – for grades 9 – 12 (System wide choice)
• Salisbury High School– for rising 9th graders only
From West Rowan High area (map available)
From Southeast Middle area (map available)
• South Rowan High School – for rising 9th graders only
From Carson High area (map available)
PROVISIONS OF SCHOOL CHOICE
SCHOOL CHOICE RENEWAL
Students who live in a school choice zone listed above and choose to attend North Rowan, Salisbury, or South Rowan High Schools under the provisions of school choice may complete grades 9-12 in those schools.
The decision to attend North Rowan, Salisbury, or South Rowan High Schools under the provisions of school choice will automatically renew annually unless parents/guardians request otherwise.
ATHLETIC WAIT PERIOD
Students who choose to attend North Rowan High, Salisbury High or South Rowan High Schools while residing in the choice zone area for that school will not be subject to the 365-day athletic wait period that applies to traditional student transfers.
Students who return to their “home school” after attending North Rowan High, Salisbury High or South Rowan High under the provisions of school choice will be subject to a 365-day athletic wait period.
SIBLINGS
Older siblings of rising ninth grade students in school choice zones may also choose to attend Salisbury or South Rowan High Schools. Older siblings may apply on the Choice Transfer Form and indicate their younger "choice" sibling in the space provided.
SCHOOL CHOICE PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE
The decision to attend North, Salisbury or South Rowan High Schools under the provisions of school choice should be made during the spring transfer window (March 1st – April 30th) but in no event later than July 1st. An exception to this July 1st deadline may be made for students who move into the choice zone areas after July 1st and prior to the start of school. Transfers into North, Salisbury or South Rowan High Schools via school choice provisions will not be allowed during the school year.
A “School Choice Form” for students residing in choice zones and wishing to attend North, Salisbury or South Rowan High Schools should be completed and returned to the Rowan-Salisbury Schools Student Transfer Coordinator at the Long Street office during the spring transfer window (March 1st – April 30th). Since transportation must be arranged for choice zone students, choice requests into North, Salisbury and South Rowan High will not be allowed after July 1st. The “School Choice Form” will be available at school sites, the Long Street Office, and will be posted on the RSS website on the Transfer Forms page.
Students attending North, Salisbury or South Rowan High Schools under the provisions of school choice will not be allowed to return to the “home school” until the following semester. A 365-day wait period for athletics would apply upon the return to the “home school.”
