Welcome to Rowan-Salisbury School System’s site about 21st century skills. The State Department of Public Instruction is focusing its efforts on ensuring that all of our students will be successful citizens and workers in the 21st century. The guiding mission of the North Carolina State Board of Education is that every public school student will graduate from high school globally competitive for work and postsecondary education and will be prepared for life in the 21st century. The State Department of Public Instruction’s goals, curriculum, assessments, and state initiatives are now aligned to accomplish this task. The Rowan-Salisbury School System’s mission is: “ to develop globally competitive schools that inspire, challenge, and empower students to meet high academic standards, lead ethical lives, and demonstrate knowledgeable, responsible citizenship in an increasingly challenging world.” In an effort to accomplish our mission, we have launched several initiatives, one of which is this web link that will provide up-to-date research information and articles on 21st century skills. Our school system has also initiated a 21st century model classroom program. Using an application process, the teachers selected for these model classrooms demonstrated a strong interest in integrating and differentiating their curriculum through the use of technology. The classrooms contain 21st century technology hardware and software and the teachers are provided with extensive professional development and other unique opportunities. Other teachers in the school system have an opportunity to visit the classrooms through this site with virtual tours and pod casts, as well as through actual site visits. We hope to be able to quickly expand our efforts so that all classrooms become 21st century places for teaching and learning. We hope you will visit our site often and check out the new and exciting ventures into the world of 21st century teaching and learning.
