| I graduated from Salisbury High School in 1977, and UNCC in 1981. I went back to school in the mid 1990s for AIG certification. I taught elementary school for 20 years before coming to middle school 7 years ago. I have three sons, ages 16, 19, and 21. |

Journey to Topaz A book about Japanese internment during World War II. Yuki, her mom, and her brother are sent to an internment camp together, while her father, and other businessmen like him are interned in other locations. This book describes what Japanese families went through during this time.

Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry The setting of this book is Mississippi in the 1930s. The Logan children grow up in the segregated south, and learn how difficult life can be.

Taking Sides Lincoln Mendoza and his mom move out of the inner city and into the suburbs after they are robbed, looking for a better life. However, Lincoln finds that the basketball coach at his new school is racist against Hispanics, and his new house is robbed.

Rising Voices A compilation of journal entries and poetry written by Native Americans. This book shows how modern Native Americans feel about their history and traditions, as well as their ancestors being moved to reservations.
