Friday Notes (February 1-5)

What a terrible week!  It has been a long time since we were faced with as much snow and ice keeping us out of school for this length of time.  Please know that we diligently tried to be in school this week.  We even contracted with a private group to clean our parking lots and sidewalks.  Unfortunately, we could not do anything about the roads.  A make-up schedule will be established next week.

Superintendent’s Advisory Team Meeting
The Superintendency Team discussed the following items at this week’s meeting:

Salisbury Rotary Club Meeting
The program for the Salisbury Rotary Club this week was “Your Rowan County Red Cross.”  Ms. Deborah Lineberger, the Director of Emergency Services for the Rowan County Chapter, shared information on the work of the chapter.  She discussed the various programs that are sponsored by the local Red Cross and the creation of the first Country-wide Organization of Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters.

North Planning Committee Meeting
A small group of central office administrators worked with Mr. McDowell on developing strategies and timelines for improving outcomes, marketing, technology, and perception for North High School.  We will share the plan with the staff for feedback and the plan will be presented to the School Board at their February meeting.

PTA Council Luncheon
Patty Overcash, Rowan-Salisbury School System’s PTA Council President continues to surprise and amaze me with her energy and support for students and parents in our schools.  In spite of the weather and icy roads, the largest number ever of attendees enjoyed an early Valentine Celebration.  The program was about the clean air grant given to the Center for the Environment at Catawba College.  PTAs were encouraged to participate in activities that have been planned.

Teacher of the Year Recognition/Celebration for Joy Jenkins
The highlight of the week was the surprise assembly to name Ms. Joy Jenkins, 3rd grade teacher at Cleveland Elementary School, the Northwest Regional Teacher of the Year.  Members of the interview team and the state director presented her with the award.  We enjoyed the excitement that the students and staff showed during the recognition and a very special reception afterwards.  Congratulations to Joy Jenkins, Northwest Regional Teacher of the Year!

Salisbury Civitan Club Meeting
The Salisbury Civitan Club celebrated Clergy Appreciation week by recognizing members of the club’s own clergy.  Dr. Ken Clapp, Catawba College Vice-President and Chaplain, was the guest speaker.
