Please read carefully and see if you are eligible for these scholarships.  Information and/or applications are available online or in the Guidance Office.

 

1.                  Rowan County Veterans  Scholarship:  Children of disabled, deceased, combat or POW/MIA Veterans contact Rowan Veterans Service office at (704) 636-1658.  Due March 1, 2008

 

2.                  Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program:  Students who show outstanding academic achievement and show promise of continued success.  GPA 3.5 Minimum SAT of 1875.  Carson High School can nominate 2 students.  Due to Mr. Connolly by January 2, 2008.

 

3.                  Elks Most Valuable Student & Elks Nursing Scholarship:  Scholarship, Leadership, Financial Need. US Citizen. 500-word essay. Due to Mr. Connolly January 2, 2008.

 

4.                  Herff Jones Principal’s Leadership Award.  One student from each school will be selected to move on in the state and national competition.  Criteria is based on academic excellence and exemplary leadership in school and community activities.  See Mr. Connolly for an application.  Due to Mr. Connolly by December 1, 2007.

 

5.                  Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation College Scholarship Program:  Scholarships of up to $10,000 in value  annually.  Must have lost a parent to breast cancer, must be a US citizen or permanent resident.  Based on academic achievement, community service, demonstrated leadership ability, financial need.  Due November 14. The Susan G. 6.                  Burger King Scholars Program: $1,000.   Be a deserving student needing funds for college expenses, 2.5 GPA, work part-time at least 15 hours per week for 40 weeks per year, recommendations from school and employer, demonstrated community service or extracurricular activities. 7.                  Hispanic Scholarship Fund: $1,000 to $2,500.  Open to community college, 4-year college, and graduate students of Hispanic heritage. Applications are evaluated on academic achievement, letter of recommendation, personal statement, and financial need.  Due December 15. Hispanic Scholarship Fund www.hsf.net

 

8.                  National Television Academy Trustees Scholarship: Television or related field $40,000. (Two awards) Must plan to major in a communications oriented program.  Early December.  www.emmyonline.org  and click on "Foundation".

 

9.                  Dr. Martin Luther King Scholarship.  Scholarship provided by NCAE for students with academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities, leadership and work experience.  Application available in guidance.  Due February 1, 2008.

 

10.              American Architectural Foundation - Minority Scholarship Program: Major in Architecture $500 - $2,500.  Open to minority students on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, essay, recommendations, nomination.  Early December.  Scholarship Programs, 1735 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20006.  www.archfoundation.org click on “Programs”.

 

11.              Sam Walton Community Scholarships:
 Apply on-line between November 1 and January 12, you must go to: www.walmartfoundation.org  click on “education”.  Over $50,000 in scholarships awarded. Deadline January 12, 2008.

 

12.              Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo Scholarship.  Awards $2,500 to area seniors attending a four-year college or university.  An essay of 500-700 words on an assigned topic is required.  Sample essays of past winners at www.demayolaw.com  Applications available in guidance.  Deadline is March 23, 2008.

BEWARE OF FEE BASED SCHOLARSHIPS & SEARCHES

           

FINANCIAL AID:
You must apply for admission to college before you apply for financial aid. The process of filling out the Federal Free Financial Aid Form (FASFA) begins in mid-December when the federal forms arrive. Tax information for the 2005 year will be needed before work can be done on the application. Some colleges will require an additional financial profile. (The CSS PROFILE) These profile applications are available in the Guidance Office at this time. ( Wake Forest , Meredith, and UNC-Chapel Hill request these forms if you are seeking financial aid.)Website: www.collegeboard.com
